2008 European Champion in Freestyle Kayaking

Some Details....

Age: 27 / Location: Nottingham, UK / Day Job: Commercial Manager

Favourite rivers/f eatures: The White Nile is a great river and the Nile special is a great feature. I also like the river Gyr in France and it's just a good fun and fast river run. For squirt boating I like the Chessezac in France and it's sweet, slow mystrey spot with clear water. Holme Pierrepont at Nottingham may be a concrete ditch but it's great for playing around in with your mates on a summers evening after work.

Goals: Boat more! A medal position at the 2007 World Championships. Make the British Team for 5th year running & attend the European Champs in Spain 2008. British Squirt Champ 2007 (4th yr running). Improve on last years position in all float boat competitions especially the Eurocup events in Austria, Sweden and Spain.

Projects: Having a greater input to the way squirt boating is being developed in the UK and internationally.

Africa

We travelled over 4000 miles south to a country not know for its political stability to paddle the White Nile. This was one of the last opportunities to paddle this section of this great river before it is dammed for hydroelectric power.

The White Nile is the only river to come out of Lake Victoria and has an average flow rate 1800 cubic meters per second, this is significantly larger than the 24 cubic meters per second that flows down Jamess local training spot at the white water course at Nottingham.

The main accommodation for trip was an island in the middle of the White Nile. Luckily it has a few basic facilities but was 20 minutes from the nearest road and 1 hour from the nearest town. However it was only 5 minutes paddle from the wave James had gone to find.

The White Nile has a plethora of different channels which range from fairly tame to certain death. Most of the time on the water was spent somewhere between these two options either running waterfalls or practicing Freestyle moves on the biggest river waves in the world.

Alaska

With no guide and no support James and two friends took their sea kayaks on a 300 mile round trip of Prince William Sound. They were on the water for just over 2 weeks and had to carry all their equipment and provisions with them. Each paddler was carrying the equivalent weight of an extra person they battled the wind, rain and tides up to 30 miles a day. They had to camp on beaches, eat freeze dried food, wash in the sea, purify their own water and use the woods as their toilet but it was all worth it as the trip took them to places only accessible by kayak.

The expedition started in the small ex-military town of Whittier, from here the 3 headed north to the main glacial region. They spent a few days exploring the area having to constantly dodge icebergs and try not to upset the seals, otters and eagles. Next was a long haul south and a route that took them through some narrow passages and across some large expanses of sea towards areas brimming with wildlife. On route they passed whales, sharks, bears, wolves, puffins and more. The way back incorporated the largest and most impressive glacier of them all which also caused several hours of delay due to the massive number of icebergs that were calving into the sea.
